Bentley Wood Year of Reading

This Year is Bentley Wood’s Year of Reading - a celebration of books, reading and literacy - and a chance for absolutely everyone to get involved!

Here at Bentley Wood, we are passionate about reading. Not only is it incredibly good for your brain and your learning development, but it is fulfilling, fantastic for your mental health and wellbeing – and it’s fun!
Why is it important that everybody reads?

Here are a few facts about the importance of reading:

  • Being a reader means you’re more likely to learn something new every day.
  • People who read are more likely to vote, exercise, and be more cultural.
  • Reading enhances your memory
  • Reading expands your vocabulary
  • Reading makes you a more empathetic person
  • People who read are statistically more likely to get ahead when it comes to their careers
Reading reduces stress and anxiety levels
  • Reading for pleasure is more important for children's cognitive development than their parents' level of education and is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background [Sullivan and Brown 2013]
  • Reading improves your imagination
  • Reading improves writing skills

Book shelf

We’ve positioned a mini bookcase in reception and more are planned around the school, including Woody’s, so you can choose a book to read over lunch. These bookshelves invite students to pick up a pre-loved donated book from members of staff and many from students who have especially enjoyed these titles. Here students can pick up a book of their choice and return it to the bookcase when they’ve finished, swapping it for another!  Please also remember to donate your own books when you have finished them!
