School Direct – Leading Learning in the Classroom

Bentley Wood High School provides high quality professional development for all staff at every level. Whether you are a beginner, a newly qualified teacher or an experienced Middle Leader, the school will provide you with leadership development opportunities. Our school motto Learning today, leading tomorrow permeates the school. We have well-trained and experienced Subject Mentors, and as a trainee teacher you will be supported at every step of your journey to gaining Qualified Teacher Status or a PGCE. We are a truly comprehensive and diverse school that believes that everybody can make a positive contribution to the learning in our community. We are delighted to be working in partnership with other Harrow schools in the Harrow Collegiate Teaching Alliance to train teachers through the School Direct route.

School Direct is a new approach to Initial Teacher Education, which involves schools recruiting trainees directly and working in partnership with Higher Education Institutions to train them.  The idea is that the school will then employ them, should there be a suitable vacancy.  There are two School Direct routes: salaried (which replaces the GTP) and non-salaried (which operates like the PGCE).  The high schools in Harrow are working collaboratively to recruit up to 38 trainees in English, maths, physics and chemistry, who will be trained in partnership with the Institute of Education.  Whitmore is the Lead School and Bentley Wood has committed to try to recruit trainees in maths, physics or chemistry.  We are only offering the non-salaried (PGCE) route, but will also consider the salaried route for the right candidates.  Applications should be made to the Lead School, Whitmore High School, making it clear that Bentley Wood High School is the preferred Home School.
