World Book Day 2022

World Book Day

Bentley Wood have celebrated another fantastic World Book Day!

This year is the 25th anniversary of the global event, and our staff and students joined others across the world in dressing up as book characters. Year 7 and 8 students made a fantastic effort with their costumes – we had an array of characters from various genres. Staff also had one of their best years yet! The Science department dressed up as the characters from Peter Pan, while English magically portrayed Lord of the Rings, and Social Sciences were chimney sweeps from Oliver Twist!

Students also dropped everything to read for the first two minutes of every lesson, where they were read an instalment of a classic Roald Dahl short story.

Other activities included Blind Date with a Book, where library books were gift-wrapped with key words written on them, so the students selected the books for the themes and not the covers. Our Golden Ticket challenge was very popular, and will be continuing into next week!

Activities that took place on the day to celebrate books included:

  • Blind Date with a Book – Books will be gift wrapped and on display with 3 key words and an age guide, so students don’t judge a book by its cover
  • £1 Free Book Tokens
  • ‘Guess Who’s Reading’ ( English Dept.) – students guess which member of staff is hiding behind a book
  • Golden Ticket Challenge – Golden Tickets are hidden in selected library books and if a student finds one and reviews the book they are awarded 5 achievement points
  • D.E.A.R – short story instalment at the start of every lesson
  • Book Character costumes – Year 7 and  Year 8 students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character
