1:1 Device Scheme 25/26

The question is no longer whether technology should have a place in the classroom, but how technology can most effectively be integrated to improve outcomes.

Educational Endowment Fund

We are delighted to introduce our Student IT Device Learning Scheme. This strategy will further improve the outstanding education that students at Bentley Wood High School receive and ensure that all students have equal access to digital technology both at school and at home.

Over the past year the school has invested significantly in its IT infrastructure and associated teacher training to prepare fully for our move to a blended learning scheme – a model which has been widely and successfully adopted over the globe in the most aspirational education systems. Introducing this scheme will have several benefits for our students, including helping to build their digital resilience, independent learning skills, creativity and collaboration.

We regularly ask students and parents for feedback. A few points we would like to share

  • 50% of students already feel that having access to their own IT devices supports their learning in class (an additional 37% feel it often does).
  • 60% of students feel that the IT device either always or most of the time supports their learning at home (an additional 19% feel it does most of the time).
  • Students like the touch screen feature and the light weight.

A summary of the benefit you and your daughter will receive by contributing to the scheme:

  • Your child will have access to their own device for learning all day, whether at school or at home. They would be asked to bring the device into school every day, carry it in their own backpack and take it home to use and complete homework.
  • A fully managed service – all software is included in the cost. Our technical support team will manage the device. All upgrades and software installations will be managed remotely by our team without the need to ‘give up’ the device.
  • A ‘safeguarded’ device – The filtering and monitoring applications on the devices will support safe, age-appropriate internet browsing for learning and study both at school and at home. The safeguarding team at school will be alerted should there be any concerns and will contact you if issues have occurred, whether at school or at home.

Parent contributions

The school provides the device at a discounted rate in comparison to market value. As a result, the cost of this device to families is £340, which families contribute £10 per month towards. Once the device is paid for via these contributions’ families own the device and do not need to make any more payments. Students will have the same device until the end of year 11. Students receiving the device at the start of Year 12 will have the device until the end of year 13.

The cost of the device for families who have siblings also in the scheme or are eligible to pupil premium are further discounted as follows:

  • Eligible to pupil premium = £170
  • Sibling of student already on the scheme = £227

Parent monthly contributions:

  • Youngest child = £10 per month (34 months)
  • Each sibling after this on the scheme = £6.67 per month (34 months)

Free School Meals eligible / Bursary Scheme eligible Parent contribution:

  • Youngest child = £5 per month (34 months)
  • Each sibling after this on the scheme = £3 per month (34 months)

Parents are welcome to pay the full balance in small number of payments if they wish

Online safety

Digital wellbeing and safety remain our priority. The Surface Go 4 will be set up in such a way to promote staying safe online. We have invested in content filtering which blocks inappropriate websites. We also monitor student interactions and what they search online. Both filtering and monitoring take place on the device in school as well as at home; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As the internet evolves rapidly and new unwanted content appears daily, the filter is updated routinely to ensure maximum safety for our students.

How to order your daughter’s device

To order your daughter’s device please use the following link to access your parent pay account:
ParentPay – Leading Cashless Payment System for Schools

Please remember that this is an optional scheme. However, we feel that the scheme offers a cheap and effective way of getting appropriate and well-managed educational technology into homes that can also be used regularly in school with your daughter. If you do not wish to participate in it, your daughter will be provided with one of the school’s own devices each day to support their learning in the classroom and they will not be at a disadvantage. However, your daughter will not be able to take this device home and will need to pick it up each morning and return it before she leaves.

If you wish to discuss this scheme further with the school, please do not hesitate to contact us – 121@Bentleywood.harrow.sch.uk .

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4?
We believe that the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 is the device that best meets the needs of Bentley Wood High School learners now and into the future.

Why does my daughter need a personal IT device?
Having good IT skills is becoming a basic requirement of any employer. Children need to be prepared for an increasingly digital world. Research has confirmed that good home access to technology has a positive impact on a child’s educational achievements; it often motivates them to do schoolwork by providing more interesting and engaging ways to learn, their work is better presented so their self-esteem grows, and they can explore subjects that interest them in their own time.

Why can’t the school provide these for free to all students?
The cost of the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 has been significantly subsidised for every student, however the school would not be able to afford to run the scheme if it paid for it in full. This is why we are asking families to contribute. If your daughter is entitled to the Pupil Premium grant and/or on free school meals, an additional subsidy will be applied to your order.

Who owns the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4?
Families who contribute to the device will eventually own the device once their contributions reach £340 (students eligible to pupil premium = £170, sibling of student already on the scheme = £227).

I’ve already got a laptop at home; can my daughter use this?
Unfortunately, your own laptop can’t be used within school for several reasons including, safeguarding, functionality and the need to charge them frequently.

I have just bought my child a laptop, can this be used in school instead of Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4?
Unfortunately, your own laptop can’t be used within school for several reasons including safeguarding, functionality and the need to charge them frequently. We understand that for those parents who have already purchased laptops, the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 will be an additional expense. To mitigate against this, students whose families do not want to contribute to the scheme can pick up and drop back a device each day, however the student will not be able to take it home or own it.

What is covered within the monthly contribution?
The monthly contribution will cover the rental of the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4, protective sleeve, warranty and Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 technical support.

 How do I order?
Parents can sign up to make contributions via Parent Pay. If you require any additional help with your order, the school can also help, please email 121@bentleywood.harrow.sch.uk. Please ensure you include your daughter’s name and year group so our IT team can help you

When will contributions begin to be collected?
Contributions will begin the month after you receive your Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4.

My daughter receives free school meals. How much will the school be subsidising the cost of the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4?
If your daughter is in receipt of free school meals, then the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 will additionally be subsidised beyond the subsidies already provided. The subsidy will not affect your means-tested household income for any state benefits you may receive.

  • Monthly contributions for a family eligible to free school meals = £5 per month
  • Total price of Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 for students eligible to pupil premium = £170

Note – following recent Government changes, families who are in receipt of Universal Credit will be able to claim Free School Meals from September 2026.

I have more than one child. Will there be any sibling discount offered?

  • 1st child = £10pm
  • 2nd child = £6.67pm
  • 3rd child = £6.67pm

When will I receive the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4?
If you place your order before the deadline dates, your child will receive their Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 during the first term. The Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 will be delivered directly to school, setup and distributed. The device will be assigned directly to your daughter and will be their responsibility to keep safe.

I’m concerned about the additional screen time that my daughter will be spending on a device during school time. How long will this be?
We don’t envisage that any child will be using a Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 for the whole day, every day. The Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 will be used when the teacher feels that their use will enhance learning for the students. We are very mindful of the impact of additional screen time and will monitor this regularly.

Will the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 replace books?
Absolutely not. The Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 is a support to learning as an additional learning tool, not a replacement for any books or written work. We are passionate about the opportunities that devices and technology offer, but important traditional skills such as writing, sketching and group discussions will continue. The roll of the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 is to enhance and extend learning opportunities.

Will we need to buy any other equipment?
No further equipment will be needed, and ideally every student should have access to the internet at home. The devices are managed by the school which prevents students from adding additional programs or software

What happens if my child leaves Bentley Wood High School before I have finished the contributions?
We will look at each case individually and the circumstances surrounding the decision to leave. We will reach a resolution on a case-by-case basis with parents.

What happens if the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 gets damaged or stolen?
Bentley Wood will support families with repairing or replacing the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 if it is accidentally damaged and stolen. However, the school can use its discretion to withhold this support if it feels the student has been careless or misused the device.

Will I have to set up the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4?
No. We will be using the latest InTune Deployment from Microsoft. This minimises the setup time and process for the device and will ensure it has the necessary software for your daughter.

Will the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 be restricted?
We use a secure management system to ensure that the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 are used safely and responsibly while in school. During the evenings, weekends, and holidays, the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 can be used freely, however our safeguarding filtering and monitoring software will continue to operate.

Will my daughter be able to access social media sites whilst at school?

The devices have been configured to limit access to specific websites; this includes social media platforms. This has been introduced to ensure that the device is being used appropriately and is not a distraction.

Will my daughter be safe if they carry the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 to and from school?
We all need to be aware of the risks that students could face on their way to and from school. They should be kept in their bags out of sight whilst travelling to and from school. Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 have the facility to be locked and any data removed remotely. In the unlikely circumstance that the Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 is stolen, Bentley Wood will support the student with a replacement if you provide the school with a crime reference number which the police will give you when you report the crime.

My daughter’s device has been damaged, will there be a loan device available?

Should your daughter’s device require repair or is awaiting replacement, we have a small bank of loan Lenovo 300w Yoga Gen 4 devices which can be used during the school day until their device is replaced.
